In collaboration with architecture studio DEDRAFT, this family garden was updated along with the retrofitting of the house interior and the kitchen extension. The landscaping includes a small patio area by the house, with a winding path leading to a garden studio and secluded pergola area.

The garden’s mature planting and borrowed views from the surrounding gardens, with multiple neighbouring trees providing lots of privacy and green, provided a beautiful backdrop for new planting. A new multi-stem Betula albosinensis ‘Fascination’ was added, its coppery bark harmonising with the hues of the kitchen extension cladding as well as the pre-existing birch to the rear of the garden. Perennials such as Geum rivale, Heuchera ‘Purple Palace’, Sanguisorba and Geranium phaem further chimed in with the colour scheme.

The pergola area is surrounded by lush planting, with fragrant climbers such as the jasmine maturing to clothe the structure. A small water feature encourages nature into the garden, as do fruiting perennials such as alpine strawberries. There is a lawn for the children to play in, which is planted out with multiple small bulbs that will pop in spring.

“Blanche made our garden varied and rambling. It looks good all year round, requires minimal maintenance, and bees and butterflies love it.”
